Goodison View: Alex Iwobi on thin ice at Everton after airing online frustration

It looked like Alex Iwobi had turned a corner with Everton fans this season but this might change after seemingly voicing his frustration with Carlo Ancelotti.

Iwobi joined the Blues from Arsenal at the beginning of the 2019/20 season but failed to prove his worth with a series of underwhelming performances.

However this season he has really come to the fore and offered some pace that is often lacking from our right-hand side.

He has already matched his Premier League goal total of one from last season and added two assists [WhoScored], something he did not manage to record any of during the last campaign.

While this is an improvement it is certainly nothing to shout about and that makes his recent remarks all the more baffling.

Iwobi took to his personal Instagram profile [09/03/21] to say “Always an honour to get a call up for my national team. Hopefully I get to play in my preferred position.”

We do not think this is about Nigeria.

On Monday evening Iwobi lined up as a right-wing back at Stamford Bridge as Ancelotti opted to pack the defence against a Chelsea side in impressive form.

With Seamus Coleman and Yerry Mina out injured the Blues were left with just four senior defenders [Mason Holgate, Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane and Lucas Digne] so Iwobi was called upon to do a job on the right.

This was only the second time he has started there [WhoScored] this season but that did not stop him seemingly taking a swipe at Ancelotti for utilising him there as the Blues went lost 2-0.

Why does Iwobi think he deserves it all?

He’s hardly James Rodriguez or Richarlison to be calling the shots and making demands of Ancelotti.

Even established senior stars like them would not risk his wrath. So what gives Iwobi the right to have a go?

All he is doing here is risking his reputation with his rapport with fans at danger of fading away.

He is usually known as a rather jovial character on social media with his ‘Beans’ stories on Snapchat often amusing Blues players and supporters.

Maybe this is just a small outburst of frustration that will not be seen again.

Regardless, he must know better and pick up his game if he wants to be considered a key component of our attacking set-up.

Carlo knows best and he would be minded to remember this.

Any more outbursts could put paid to his Everton career.
