‘I was thinking wow’ – Exclusive: Campbell hails Pickford’s performance in Everton v Chelsea

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell insists Everton have Jordan Pickford to thank for keeping their scoreline against Chelsea respectable.

The Blues lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Monday night as a Ben Godfrey own goal and a Jorginho penalty ended our nine-game unbeaten run away from Goodison Park.

Despite giving away the penalty, Campbell claims Pickford still deserves plaudits for his display as he kept the Toffees in the game.

“I thought maybe he rushed out too quickly, thinking he could get there,” Campbell told Goodison News.

“Listen, it happens. If we’re honest, he made eight saves in the game. Some of them were one on ones with Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi where you expect them to score.

“There were some stonewallers. I was thinking ‘wow’. Everton could’ve been beaten heavily if it wasn’t for Pickford so sometimes you have to take the rough with the smooth.”

Pickford has been much better in recent weeks and he was in top form at Stamford Bridge.

He played a perfect game, other than giving away the penalty, but if he hadn’t brought Kai Havertz down then the German would probably have scored anyway.

We should be happy that the England international has discovered a bit of form because without him we may not have won our games against West Brom and Liverpool in the last few weeks.

We have a massive end of the season coming up and if Pickford can maintain his good form then we have a great chance of securing European football for next season.
