‘Sad to lose him’ – Everton exclusive: Campbell delivers verdict on Pickford injury blow
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell claims Everton won’t be weakened by the injury sustained by number one goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Pickford went off injured against Burnley last week and the club have said he will miss England’s upcoming internationals which raises questions over how long he’ll be missing for the Blues.
Campbell insists Everton have a very capable number two in Robin Olsen and he thinks his former side will manage without their injured keeper.
“The goalkeeper position is one of the stronger departments,” Cambell exclusively told Goodison News.
“Pickford has been doing well so it’s obviously sad to lose him but they’ve got decent goalkeepers as backup.
“There’s a 1A in Pickford and a 1B in Olsen isn’t there? I don’t think they’ll be weakened in that position with Pickford out.”
This is yet another injury to a key player we will have to deal with but thankfully, on this occasion, we have a ready-made replacement.
Olsen has made five appearances in the Premier League this season while also making three appearances in the FA Cup.
He may be set to make a few more league appearances if Pickford’s injury rules him out for a few weeks.
The only bad performance he’s put in was at Old Trafford when he made an error as he couldn’t stop Scott McTominay’s soft header but this pales in comparison to some of the mistakes Pickford has made this season.
Admittedly, the England international has been much better in recent weeks and losing him at the moment is a bitter blow but Olsen isn’t much of a downgrade.
Olsen will have a huge task ahead of him this weekend as he looks set to be given a start against Manchester City in the FA Cup.
He’ll face plenty of shots so he’ll have a chance to impress, we really hope he takes it.
