Kevin Campbell says how Everton can get the best out of Alex Iwobi
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell insists Alex Iwobi’s hit and miss form for Everton isn’t solely his fault as he isn’t being supported by other players.
Iwobi has looked bright in some games for us this season but in others he has looked completely lost and has been a wasted shirt.
Campbell claims that without quality full-backs Iwobi will struggle as the attacker doesn’t have the necessary support to contribute to attacks.
“Iwobi is a recognised number 10 and he can play wide,” Campbell exclusively told Goodison News.
“He’s had good games and he’s had bad games and he’s had indifferent games and that ties into the consistency of Everton to be honest.
“Iwobi is going to suffer without quality full-backs. I know that might sound weird but when you play in a creative positive you need players around you who can handle the ball.
“If those players aren’t there to help out then that’s going to hurt you.”
If Iwobi maintained the same standards he hit in our away win at Wolves in January he would be one of the best players in the Premier League.
That is no exaggeration, he was phenomenal in that game.
He scored in that clash and was easily our man of the match, on another night he could’ve had a couple of goals and a few assists.
According to Wyscout, he received the ball on 35 occasions in that game which is his second-highest involvement in a Premier League game this season.
His stats prove Campbell’s point, when Iwobi is supported properly he can be deadly and more importantly the key to our success.
While Lucas Digne is a very good full-back, we lack talent on the other side with Seamus Coleman sidelined.
We must fix this issue as it will benefit our attackers as well as our defenders.
