‘You’re seeing the progress’ – Kevin Campbell claims fifth place is success for Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell insists that finishing fifth would be a success for Everton even though a Champions League finish looked possible earlier in the campaign.

The Blues started the Premier League season in fine form and led the division for the first few weeks of the campaign.

The club’s form has been inconsistent since the early weeks of the season and Campbell claims a fifth-placed finish would be a huge success for Carlo Ancelotti in his first full season at Goodison Park.

Everton

“Don’t worry about that, if Everton can get fifth place they’d take it,” Campbell exclusively told Goodison News.

“That’s European qualification. It’s stepping stones because you don’t want to walk before you can crawl.

“Ancelotti’s come in and done well for the first six months now he’s having his first full season and if he can get them into Europe then you’re seeing the progress.

“It [Europe] means they can sign better players in the summer and fatten the squad up with good players.”

European football is European football.

Playing in the Champions League would be ideal but we certainly wouldn’t turn our noses up at a run in the Europa League.

Playing in Europe regularly is the sign of a big club and if we are to improve our status as a club then playing in Europe on a regular basis is important.

Like Campbell says, it also means we can attract better players.

This could be huge ahead of a busy summer when Ancelotti will once again look to shift the players he doesn’t think are good enough and bring in better replacements.

A European finish means we’ve had a successful season, we need a strong end to the campaign once league football returns.
