‘Embarrassing’ – Andy Burnham slams Jordan Ayew’s antics during Everton v Crystal Palace

Mayor of Greater Manchester and Everton fan Andy Burnham aimed a jibe at Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew during Monday’s clash between the Eagles and the Blues.

Ayew went to the floor under a challenge in the first half and screamed his head off before Kevin Friend awarded Palace a free-kick.

It was a reaction that we have come to expect from certain football players but Ayew’s yelp seemed very over the top considering the challenge.

Burham took to Twitter to voice his frustration at an unnamed player who we suspect to be Ayew based on the timing of the tweet.

He also made a serious point about the COVID pandemic and how footballers are embarrassing themselves with some of their over the top screams.

He said, “One of the interesting things revealed by the pandemic is the embarrassing nature of Premier League players’ howls when subject to an average Sunday League tackle.”

Burnley boss Sean Dyche recently commented on this issue after his side’s game against Arsenal as The Mirror quote him as saying, “Some real good screaming today, on the scream-o-meter probably the highest I’ve heard for a long time and there’s some pretty high ones.”

It’s a problem that has really been highlighted by the lack of fans in Premier League grounds as especially without artificial crowd noise, you really hear how some players overreact.

If a player is hurt and has to go off then fair enough, we understand as it was clearly a bad injury.

But Ayew got up straight away and carried on playing after a bit of limping which we also suspect was slightly put on.

Players should be called out when they act like this and referees should really be having a word with serial offenders.

Burnham’s right, it’s embarrassing and shame on the referees who let this happen on a weekly basis.
