Ex-Roma winger Chierico wants Italy return for Ancelotti

Former Roma star Odoacre Chierico has claimed that Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti would be a “dream” appointment in the Italian capital.

Current Roma manager Paulo Fonseca looks set to leave when his contract expires this summer, having failed to take the club into the top four this season.

Roma are currently seventh in the Seria A table, as well as seven points away from Atalanta in fourth, leading the Giallorossi to consider a new managerial appointment at the end of the season.

Talking to TuttoMercatoWeb, former Roma winger Chierico called on the club to consider appointing an Italian manager, citing Ancelotti as his “dream” target.

When asked about reports linking Porto boss Sergio Conceicao with the Roma job, Chierico said: “We have many good coaches and I don’t understand why we rack our brains.

“The Italian coaches go abroad and do well, we should focus on them.

“I dream of the return of Carlo Ancelotti, but there are many good ones among our compatriots.”

Keep on dreaming

Carlo Ancelotti’s legacy as a top-class manager has long been established so it stands to reason that Chierico would wish to see the Everton boss return to the Stadio Olimpico.

During Ancelotti’s playing days the Italian enjoyed a successful period with the Giallorossi, winning one Serie A title and four Coppa Italia titles in Rome, so he is remembered fondly by Roma fans.

Ancelotti also has a host of honours as a manager in Italy, claiming two Champions League successes among many other titles as manager of AC Milan between 2001 and 2009.

Fonseca, who was previously linked with an Everton switch, hasn’t been able to keep up with the Serie A elite this season. Ancelotti meanwhile has turned a tune out of the Toffees despite not yet having shaped his side to reflect his style and ethos.

Everton supporters won’t have anything to fear however, with the Blues boss content on Merseyside and keen to continue his association with the club for the foreseeable future.

Chierico’s “dream” will have to remain just that for the time being.
