Alan Brazil urges Chelsea to sign Everton talisman Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Alan Brazil has called on Chelsea to get their wallet out again and prise Dominic Calvert-Lewin from the clutches of Everton.
Calvert-Lewin has been in inspired form for the Blues this season and only three players (Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Bruno Fernandes) have scored more Premier League goals than his tally of 14.
His heroics in front of goal have attracted plenty of plaudits with Everton legend Tony Cottee labelling him “sensational” [PA News agency via BT] in October.
Brazil, host of the talkSPORT Breakfast show [06:00, 09/04/21], has been thoroughly impressed by Calvert-Lewin’s goalscoring exploits and believes Chelsea could do with his presence up front.
“I like him, I do, can he do it at a real high-pressure club like Chelsea?,” he pondered.
“Well Everton is a big football club of course but there’s just something about him.
“He’s so good in the air, he climbs, you get the ball in the box and he’s got a great leap on him, he’s quick and holds the ball up. I just think Chelsea need him.”
Brazil was then asked whether he would take him over Tammy Abraham.
“Yes, yeah I would yeah. I would sorry, I’d have Calvert-Lewin in there, I would,” he said.
Hands off
Chelsea shelled out £47.5million [BBC] for Bundesliga bagsman Timo Werner last summer as well as £71million on Kai Havertz [BBC].
Both can play in the central striking position but between them they have just six goals in 51 combined Premier League appearances.
Abraham and Olivier Giroud are more traditional centre-forwards at the club but neither of them have scored more than six in the league.
Clearly Calvert-Lewin is a level above all of them at the moment, but he’s not for sale.
He is indispensable to this side despite a run of just one goal in his last seven Blues games.
Carlo Ancelotti will be looking to shape his team around him and we’re not a club in desperate need of the money either, so this is a non-starter for us.
Would it even be a massive step up for him? We’re not convinced, this club is heading in the right direction under Ancelotti and we think he will be the man to lead us into a new, more successful, dawn.
