View: Davies season deserves Everton contract offer

Though Tom Davies has sometimes split opinion on Merseyside, the Everton midfielder has done a marvellous job for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season.

The 22-year old was named as Ancelotti’s only available natural central midfielder against Brighton on Monday, with a slew of injuries having ravaged Everton squad depth.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Mason Holgate were tasked with aiding the England youth international, but ultimately they weren’t able to create enough to give the Blues an edge over the Seagulls.

Since December, Davies has been an integral player in Ancelotti’s squad, missing only a couple of games through minor injury or squad rotation.

Additionally he has been able to rise to the occasion, with the midfielder having received praise throughout the campaign for improving his performance levels under Ancelotti.

As one of Everton’s most consistent performers and as someone who has remained ever present throughout a difficult and congested campaign, Davies deserves a new contract at Goodison Park.

Davies’ current deal expires in the summer of 2023, having signed his last contract extension in April 2019. Since then he has drastically improved as a player, while his value within Everton’s squad has risen too.

Ancelotti made note of his improvement just last month, declaring him to be a great “team player” whose “heart is big”.

Linked with a season-long loan to Southampton last summer, Davies hasn’t been subject of much transfer speculation over the past few months but that isn’t to say suitors won’t begin to come knocking if Davies can maintain his run of form.

Both for showing marked improvement on a personal level and for doing an effective job as a team player during a time in which his teammates around him fell foul to injury, Davies deserves to be offered renewed contract terms when the season comes to a close.
