Alan Brazil hints there are underlying issues at Everton in transfer dig

Alan Brazil has taken a swipe at Everton for under-performing with Carlo Ancelotti as manager and big sums spent on transfers.

The Blues are winless in six games and this nightmare run has seen them slide down to eighth, and they could slip to tenth by the end of the week if results conspire against them.

It was a season that started so well and promised so much as Carlo Ancelotti’s side stormed to the top of the Premier League in the early weeks before their form dipped as injuries piled up.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast with Brazil [06:30, 22/04/21] the radio host was aghast with the Blues when Ally McCoist commented that Tottenham Hotspur “surely have to get it right now” after sacking Jose Mourinho.

“We say that about lots of clubs don’t we, look at Everton and how much they’ve spent,” he said.

“Have Everton got it right? Look at the table, they’re eighth and they’ve spent how many hundred millions? They’ve got a top, top coach but something’s not right there, something’s just not right, I don’t know what it is.”

Nothing sinister over here

Granted, we’ve certainly had our fair share of misses in the transfer market since the arrival of Farhad Moshiri as owner in 2016.

Yannick Bolasie, Cenk Tosun and Davy Klaasen will go down as some of our biggest flops that have proved costly.

But we shouldn’t forget the likes of Lucas Digne who came in for a relatively modest fee and Richarlison and Ben Godfrey who would already reap a massive profit were they to be sold.

Indeed Godfrey was part of a successful summer spree at the start of the season when he arrived with Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure as the only players who cost a significant transfer fee, and they have all proved astute deals.

Besides, we’ve lost the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Idrissa Gueye for big sums in recent years and so the dig by Brazil seems a bit harsh.

It’s still to early to judge our standing in the league and we think Ancelotti deserves another summer transfer window and full season before his work can be properly judged.

The squad he inherited was pretty poor and it takes time to rebuild, but he’s made a good fist of it.

The building blocks are in place, now it’s just about adding the final bricks to ensure a solid foundation for an assault on the top four next season.
