Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti slams greed of European Super League clubs
Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti claims he was certain all along that the European Super League stood no chance of fully operating as a legit competition.
The headlines have been dominated by the news that broke out on Sunday evening that six Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, had joined a breakaway continental competition alongside six other founders from Spain and Italy.
The response to this was unparalleled as players, fans, pundits and more joined forces to condemn the decision, and the clubs were all forced into an embarrassing climbdown late on Tuesday and early Wednesday morning.
Speaking at his pre-match Arsenal conference on Thursday afternoon, Ancelotti gave his verdict on the week’s stunning turn of events.
In quotes relayed by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland on his personal Twitter profile, Ancelotti said: “I was sure that the Super League was not going to happen. These 12 clubs were wrong. They didn’t consider the players, managers or supporters. They wanted a competition without sporting merit. This is not acceptable.”
On what punishment should be dished out to the disobedient clubs, he said: “I am not the right person to judge if they should be punished. There are rules to respect but I cannot say if they are to be punished or not.”
Classy Carlo
We never really expected Ancelotti to come out and savage these six clubs with an angry rant about how they should have everything stripped from them.
That’s just not how he operates, he’s a calm and mild-mannered presence who very rarely shows his temper in public.
The very fact that he has voiced his disapproval and labelled it as unacceptable, though, shows just how disrespected he feels inside.
Quite right too, as these self-indulgent sides conspired to block his dreams and ambitions with Everton.
We’re probably the club that would feel most aggrieved given our plans to climb back to the big time with a new stadium in the offing.
A breakaway league closed off to most other sides in Europe would have had major consequences for us, and the clubs that tried to make that a real prospect deserve the full weight of the law.
