Martin Tyler stunned by goal in Everton v Arsenal clash
Martin Tyler was in disbelief at the goal that opened the scoring in a drab game between Everton and Arsenal on Friday evening.
It took 76 minutes but a freak own goal by Gunners goalkeeper Bernd Leno gave the Blues a crucial lead at the Emirates Stadium.
Richarlison fired the ball across goal and there appeared to be little danger before Leno took matters into his own hands, quite literally, to hand Everton the advantage.
Tyler was commentating on Sky Sports during live coverage of the game and he was dumbfounded by Leno’s error.
He said: “It took something extraordinary to open up this game, how did the goalkeeper do that?”
On a plate
It was a really comical goal to hand us the initiative in a crucial clash in North London.
In a really dire encounter it was always going to require something spectacular or out of the ordinary to open the scoring, and it was certainly the latter here.
As Blues fans we’re no stranger to goalkeeping blunders, and Jordan Pickford has certainly had his fair share during his time at Goodison Park and also this season.
But has he made a mistake as bad as Leno’s against us?
It was as bad as you’re likely to see from the German goalkeeper as it actually looked harder to create a goal from the ball that Richarlison played across.
Quite what he was thinking we’ll never know but after six games without a win, including three scoreless games on our part, we’re in the mood for presents.
This was the gift of all gifts but it did come from Richarlison’s perseverance and driving run, so he deserves some credit as well.
