Kevin Campbell believes Everton should consider centre-back signing
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes Everton could clamp down on defensive errors made this season by signing a centre-back in the summer.
The Toffees have been linked with a number of defensive options over the past few months, with Kalidou Koulibaly and Merih Demiral most prominently considered to be targets.
Carlo Ancelotti recently explained that he wouldn’t consider signing a central defender in the summer due to the wealth of options currently at Goodison Park.
Despite this however, Campbell believes that Ancelotti could look to exploit the Italian transfer market if he wishes to shore up his backline.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “Carlo Ancelotti knows the players out in Italy very well and that [defence] could be part of the pitch he wants to tighten up.
“Obviously we’ve seen a few mistakes in the backline at times, and he’s probably thinking ‘if I could get one or two in, I could clamp that down and make it even better’.
“It’s all part of the moving and shaking of trying to get Everton to be a force going into that new stadium.”
Everton are stacked with defensive options currently, and with Ancelotti dismissing talks of a transfer move for a defender it doesn’t appear likely that someone will be brought in.
That said, you should never say never, and it ultimately depends on whether Everton field any offers for the defenders that they currently have.
Any club can change their transfer plans at the blink of an eye so, though it isn’t likely, signing a centre-back shouldn’t be ruled out as an absolute.
