Ancelotti points to significant summer investment at Everton
Carlo Ancelotti has indicated that Everton are prepared to invest heavily in the squad this summer as the club look to continue progressing.
The Toffees saw significant investment in the transfer market last summer, with Abdoulaye Doucoure, Ben Godfrey and Allan joining for a combined fee of around £60-65million.
James Rodriguez was also brought to the club on a free transfer, with the former Real Madrid superstar keen to reunite with his former boss Ancelotti.
With the transfer window fast approaching, it has been expected that Everton could once again spend considerably this summer, and Ancelotti has indicated that the club will provide necessary funds to improve his squad.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Ancelotti said: “It’s a club that has a clear project. In this clear project, you need to invest because you want to improve and be better in the future.
“We didn’t talk for the next season at least, but we are going to talk in the next few weeks at least to try and improve the squad and to be better next season.
“This is the idea we have and that everyone in the club has. This season, I don’t know how we’re going to finish, but until now we’ve improved a lot compared to last season.
“The improvement was there, I think we can step up quickly if we have a good position in Europe for next season, but also we can step up and put in place a good programme for next season.”
Necessary for progression
Everton have been a frustrating team to follow this season, because although they are within touching distance of the Champions League, they could have been much better off with a little more consistency.
The Blues have taken six points from Arsenal, four from Tottenham, four from Liverpool, four from Leicester and three from Chelsea, which is an impressive record against most of the Premier League’s best sides.
However they’ve also lost in games against Southampton, Burnley, Fulham and twice against Newcastle, while they’ve drawn on a number of occasions when a win was there for the taking.
Everton aren’t in the top four currently because they’ve failed to take their chances, and part of that comes down to injury issues and a dire lack of squad depth.
Should Farhad Moshiri allow Ancelotti and Marcel Brands to sign who they like this summer, there is every chance that the Toffees could propel themselves into the Champions League next season.
We just need to see continued improvement on the pitch, and investment will do half the work getting us there.
