Ancelotti explains an attitude change is ‘vital’ to Everton success

Carlo Ancelotti has demanded that his Everton side change their attitude following yet another disappointing Premier League result.

The Toffees failed to beat an inconsistent Aston Villa at Goodison Park last Saturday, putting their pursuit of European qualification in doubt.

Everton will next face West Ham, while they still have games to play against Manchester City and another fixture with Aston Villa before the end of the campaign.

Speaking after Everton’s failure to beat the Villans, Ancelotti explained how it is “vital” that his players switch up their mentality ahead of the final five games of the season.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Ancelotti said: “We have a vital game next game against West Ham. Of course we have to change the attitude, the mentality and the result at home.

“We still have two games at home, against Sheffield United and against Wolves. Of course we have to win to stay in the fight, we can’t make mistakes anymore.

“If we want to stay in the fight every game is vital. That’s how it was for this game, this game was really important.

“We missed a great, big opportunity. But it’s not the last chance that we had, fortunately.

“We have other chances, but of course we have to change the attitude.”

Talk is cheap

Carlo is absolutely correct. Everton’s squad is in need of a complete attitude and mentality revamp, with the remaining five games of the season crucial to the club’s European hopes.

However, talk is cheap, as unfortunate as that might be.

We’ve heard many players come out this season and put the squad’s ambition on record, claiming that the players are all pulling together and are all working tirelessly to achieve their collective goal.

Despite this though, we continue to see capitulation on the pitch in the most frustrating and inopportune moments.

Everton have enough talent within their ranks to secure qualification to one of the European competitions, and they’ve certainly got a manager capable of leading those players to success. However, something clearly isn’t working.

Perhaps it does all come down to mentality issues, but perhaps it could be a coaching problem too. Either way, we’re just not seeing enough on the pitch to make us truly believe that Europe is even a possibility at this point.

We don’t want more empty declarations of intent, we want positive, realised results and points on the board.
