Sidibe claims Ancelotti didn’t want his Everton exit

Former Everton defender Djibril Sidibe claims that Carlo Ancelotti didn’t want to see him leave the club when he returned to Monaco last summer.
The France international joined the Blues on a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2019, signed by former manager Marco Silva before Ancelotti replaced him in the Goodison Park dugout in December.

The World Cup winner, who played 25 times in the Premier League for the Toffees, had a permanent option of just £12.7million included in his loan agreement.

Everton ultimately didn’t elect to take up the permanent option in Sidibe’s contract. However, the player claims that both Ancelotti and himself had wanted to see the loan deal turn permanent.

As reported by Le10 Sport, Sidibe said: “My first wish was to continue in the Premier League.

“When you play at Anfield or Old Trafford, you see the fans and the structures, it’s the best for a football fan.

Carlo Ancelotti wanted me to stay. The clubs did not find an agreement and I returned to Monaco where the coach immediately said, ‘I’m counting on him’.”

Didn’t quite fit

Djibril Sidibe experienced mixed fortunes during his time on Merseyside, with fan opinion over whether he deserved to sign on a permanent basis conveniently split down the middle.

The Frenchman often showed real ability surging forward down the right for Everton, with his crossing ability particularly impressive from the flanks.

However, Sidibe wasn’t as composed when absorbing pressure in a defensive position, failing to switch between offensive and defensive mindsets in the same fluid manner as Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne frequently manage.

Described as “unbelievable” by assistant manager and former caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson last season, Sidibe was far too often inconsistent for Everton to hang their long-term right-back hopes on the Frenchman, though not signing a replacement was a strange call.

It isn’t such a surprise that Ancelotti didn’t want to see Sidibe go though, with the Everton boss desiring more pedigree at Goodison Park, and as a World Cup winner Sidibe certainly brought with him a certain level of experience and calibre during his loan spell.
