Everton bid for Jamie Carragher’s son, James, from Wigan Athletic
Everton want to sign Jamie Carragher’s son James from League One club Wigan Athletic, according to The Times journalist Paul Joyce.
The newspaper’s Northern Football Correspondent claims talks have taken place between the clubs over the 18-year-old’s future, with the Blues tabling a bid that has already been rejected.
Wigan have offered the defender a professional contract with his scholarship coming to its conclusion, but Everton have been tracking him since he impressed in a youth game against him and they are looking to devlop him in their Under-23s side which is set for a revamp.
The Athletic reported last month that director of football Marcel Brands is keen to trim numbers and build a more youthful Under-23s side for David Unsworth.
At 18 Carragher would help to lower the average age, though he would arrive with no first-team experience under his belt.
Carragher finally a Blue?
We all know about Jamie Carragher’s past love of Everton in his youth, before he was forced to don the Red colours and embarked on a successful playing career with our Merseyside rivals.
But we know he’s still got a soft spot for the club, evidenced in his analysis for Sky Sports.
Surely he’ll be backing his son James for a transfer to Goodison Park.
Wigan’s not exactly a distance away but a move back to the city, at a Premier League club with an esteemed youth set-up, is surely too tempting.
James Carragher may feel like he has a good chance of first-team football at Wigan but they’re a club who have been in turmoil for a number of seasons and despite a new takeover, there is still a sense of uncertainty at the club.
The chance to work with to coaches at Everton and potentially a world-class manager like Carlo Ancelotti is a big draw, and we might finally get to see a Carragher in a Blues shirt.
It’s been a long time coming.
