Callum Connolly bids emotional Everton farewell on Twitter

Everton defender Callum Connolly has issued an emotional farewell to Everton ahead of his departure from the club in the summer.

The Liverpool-born 23-year-old has been at the club since 2006, rising up the youth ranks before making his first-team debut as a substitute for Seamus Coleman against Southampton in April 2016.

Unfortunately that proved to be his one and only Blues appearance as he embarked on a series of loan spells that included stays at the likes of Wigan Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and Fleetwood Town, where he has spent the last 18 months at.

The Liverpool Echo reported last month that he was set to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract in the summer, with Marcel Brands eyeing a shakeup of the Under-23s group which he has been a part of when he’s not been out on loan.

Writing on his personal Twitter profile, Connolly seemingly confirmed his exit.

He said: “Big thank you to everyone involved at Everton for my 14 years at the club. Many loans along the way but always been a blue. I wish nothing but the best for the club going forward.”

Always a Blue

We heard a lot of good things about Connolly as he began to make his way into the Everton first-team picture.

He was considered a prodigious young talent, evidenced in an array of England youth caps, including four for the Under-21s in 2018.

But his debut was as good as it got for him as he departed on countless loans to try and make his name in senior football.

The past two seasons have seen him ply his trade in League One so at 23-years-old, an extension to his Blues contract was never likely.

Brands is eager to ship out some of the deadwood at Finch Farm, and Connolly is one of many expected casualties of some ruthless decision making at board level.

As ever, we wish a local lad luck and hope to see him grind his way back to the Premier League.
