Pundit backs Everton captain Seamus Coleman for Manchester United move

Irish pundit Ger Gilroy believes that Seamus Coleman should consider a move to Manchester United if Everton fail to stump up the cash for their captain.

Coleman, 32, has been at the club since 2009 and his Blues contract doesn’t expire until June 2022. [Transfermarkt]. He’s due for talks over a new deal in the “next few weeks”.

But speaking on YouTube show Off The Ball, Gilroy believes he should think about a move elsewhere, and mooted Manchester United as a possible destination.

Everton

“If Everton aren’t going to actually give him all the money that he deserves then why not play a season for somebody else,” he said.

“If you’re one of these top teams Coleman’s performances at right-back, right wing-back and the third man in a three-man defence would suggest he could legitimately hold his own or play a role for almost any team in the Premier League.

“Would Manchester United not be happy having him as the third man in a trio of central defenders, suddenly adding a little bit of pace to the slow coaches beside him, or as the right wing-back or as somebody to teach Aaron Wan-Bissaka ‘this is how you’re supposed to play’?

“So Wan-Bissaka plays 70% of games, Coleman plays the other 30% but suddenly there’s strength-in-depth and in the big European games you’re like ‘come on Seamus’.”

No chance

Does Gilroy really think Coleman would give up his amazing Everton career to defect to Manchester United?

Coleman’s loyalty has never been in question and we can’t see how he would risk the wrath of supporters for a year or two with them.

Besides, Carlo Ancelotti remains a big fan of the Blues stalwart and recently told the Everton club website that he is the “perfect example of how a player has to be”, and said that director of football Marcel Brands would be handling discussions over his future in the “next few weeks”.

Coleman may not have played as regularly this season as he has done previously, owing to injury and Ancelotti’s preferred selection, but he’s still started 15 Premier League games so far, with a further seven outings from the bench, and registered three assists. [WhoScored]

He still has plenty to offer and with a dearth of senior full-backs at the club, the Blues board and management won’t be keen to see him leave in a hurry.
