View: Everton should avoid bargain move for Cuadrado this summer
Everton’s pursuit of a winger this summer has been highly publicised in recent weeks, with the Liverpool Echo covering the club’s transfer priorities last month.
James Rodriguez has often been deployed on the right this season, in the club’s absence of a natural right-sided winger who can consistently provide a positive impact.
Alex Iwobi has also played on the right while Seamus Coleman has been used on the rare occasion in a more advanced role, and neither have convinced in that role.
Carlo Ancelotti needs someone to fill that role this summer as he continues to build an Everton team that can compete with the top four, however he must make sure to bring the right player to Goodison Park.
As such he shouldn’t consider Juventus winger Juan Cuadrado, who Fichajes believe has caught the eye of the Italian coach.
Fichajes claim that Juventus are willing to sell the Colombian for around £12.8million (€15million) this summer to ease pressure on their wage bill, with Everton said to have submitted a proposal.
However, at almost 33-years old, Cuadrado is a player who Everton should avoid when the transfer window opens next month.
Everton spent significant resources last summer on players that fall outside of Marcel Brands’ age remit, with the club ideally wanting to sign players with a maximum age of 26.
The Toffees have an ageing squad and as they look to build for the long-term they don’t want more players joining the club on high wages without the prospect of a sell-on value.
Primarily known for his time in Italy but also a Premier League winner with Chelsea, Cuadrado has equally played at right-back this season as well as on the right wing, but in either position, Everton should be considering younger and more hungry targets.
If this was 2016 and Everton were after Cuadrado, we’d be all for it because the Colombian clearly has ability. Unfortunately though his signing takes the club in the wrong direction, and so Ancelotti should avoid a potential bargain and look elsewhere.
