Everton in hunt for Wolfsburg winger Josip Brekalo
Everton have been on a scouting mission in Germany to watch Wolfsburg winger Josip Brekalo, according to the Express.
The report claims the Blues have been watching the 22-year-old at the high-flying Bundesliga side for the past few months alongside Premier League rivals Leeds United, while Bayern Munich and Napoli are also credited with an interest in him.
Brekalo has been tracked by Everton since his Dinamo Zagreb days with the Express claiming the Blues wanted to sign the Croatia international as a 17-year-old.
His Wolfsburg deal runs until June 2023 [Transfermarkt] though German news outlet Kicker reported last month that he had separated from his agent Fali Ramadani, with his father now advising him.
Brekalo hit the headlines last weekend after scoring a hat-trick in Wolfsburg’s 3-0 win over Union Berlin that kept their Champions League dreams well and truly alive.
He is their second top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with seven goals, while he has also weighed in with three assists.
Where are the wingers?
A lack of width and pace has plagued our season and could be one of the key reasons that we miss out on European football next season.
Our defence has been pretty solid in the main, up until some disastrous performances from the likes of Mason Holgate and Michael Keane recently.
Carlo Ancelotti has made this Blues side difficult to break down, but we’ve had problems creating chances at the other end.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison have stuck out like a sore thumb as our attacking threats, while James Rodriguez has also shown star quality when he’s not been out injured.
But after that we are seriously lacking in forward quality, particularly on the wings.
Richarlison is effective from the left but likes to creep into central striking positions while Rodriguez spends most of his time in the middle despite starting on the right.
Alex Iwobi and Bernard are the other players that can play out wide but they are both well short of the standard we require, and reinforcements are a must.
Brekalo could offer a much-needed injection of pace and quality out wide to this one-paced Blues side.
