Dale Johnson: This is why Tyrone Mings was allowed to stay on pitch v Everton

Everton crashed to a disappointing 0-0 draw in their Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Thursday evening.

The Toffees had chances towards the end of the game at Villa Park, but there was no cutting edge on show from either side.

Tyrone Mings was at the heart of the controversy, first not getting sent off, and secondly not leaving the pitch after receiving treatment before making a crucial clearance.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was about to tap home for all three points in the dying moments but was denied at the final opportunity.

ESPN journalist Dale Johnson has shared rulings that prove that Martin Atkinson was right to allow Mings to remain on the pitch.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, there is a rule that states players don’t have to leave the action if they collide with the goalkeeper.

“Law five states players do not need to leave the field when a goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided and need attention,” he wrote.

Regardless.

No matter this ruling, Mings should never have been on the pitch for this collision to even happen at Villa Park.

The defender was late with a shocking challenge on Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the second half, and despite a VAR review, he was let off the hook.

Mings was nowhere near the ball and caught his fellow England international above the knee despite the ball being much lower.

There is no consistency from officials, but how many times have we had to say that?

We have every right to be angered by this, if Mings wasn’t on the pitch, the Toffees will have been travelling back to Merseyside with all three points; they were desperately needed in our European charge.
