Alisson thanks Everton and Ancelotti following Liverpool goal

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has praised Everton and Carlo Ancelotti following his last-minute winner against West Brom on Sunday.

The Brazilian helped his side edge past the Baggies in a frustrating fixture at the Hawthorns, with Liverpool needing to win to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Alisson went up for a corner deep into second-half stoppage time and scored a header that many forwards would be proud of, securing the three points for the Reds.

Speaking live after the game, an emotional Alisson took the time to thank all of those who have offered him their support throughout a difficult personal year for the player, whose 57-year old father tragically passed away unexpectedly as recently as February.

Alisson said: “I’ve been away from interviews for a long time, it was a difficult time because always when I talk about it I get emotional.

“But I just really want to thank all of you; the Premier League, the players I received letters from, managers from teams, for example Everton, Ancelotti and all the players, Manchester City and Chelsea.

“I don’t want to be not fair with the others that I don’t remember but I just want to say thank you to everybody.

“If it wasn’t for you I could never get through this because I’m just away from my family since the thing happened. I just want to say thank you in this moment.”

Touch of class

Rivalry is an important aspect of football but there are times when it must be put aside, and Everton have earned their nickname ‘the people’s club’ over the years.

Alisson has had a very difficult year, both on and off the field, and it’s always fantastic to hear that the Toffees are out to be supportive and do the right thing.

Putting rivalry aside, Alisson’s goal was superb – at least as far as goals scored by goalkeepers are concerned. It was a great finish but it also gave Liverpool a much needed boost as the race for the Champions League heats up, much to the chagrin of us.

But we’re not mostly impressed by the calibre of the Brazilian’s first goal, we’re instead mostly glad that Ancelotti and Everton continue to show class off the pitch, even if they may struggle to do so on a consistent basis on the pitch.
