Carlo Ancelotti believes Everton defender Ben Godfrey should make Euro squad
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti believes Ben Godrey has done enough to merit a place in Gareth Southgate’s England side for this summer’s Euros.
The 23-year-old joined Everton from Norwich this summer after impressive for the Canaries in their first season back up under Daniel Farke.
While collectively they looked unfit for the task, individually they had a lot of players who impressed and were linked with transfers at the end of the season.
The likes of Max Aarons, Emiliano Buendia and Todd Cantwell all continued at Carrow Road, but the defensive duo of Godrey and Jamal Lewis moved to Premier League clubs.
While Lewis’ move hasn’t worked out as he’s failed to cement a regular spot in the Newcastle playing eleven, Godrey has taken his game to the next level and by doing so, has strengthened Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton defence.
The Italian believes that he’s done enough to make Southgate’s squad for next month.
In his press conference, he said, via Adam Jones, “He did his best this season. If he is selected it will be a fantastic gift for him and his season which has been absolutely outstanding.
“He did his best and for me, it’s enough.”

National team coaches are often rigid and likely to bring players they’re suited to and who have worked with them previously.
Southgate prefers the likes of Eric Dier and Tyrone Mings when defenders like James Tarkowski, Ben Mee and now Godfrey have been better than them.
On form based on the last two seasons, we certainly think Godrey is one of England’s top five centre-backs. His versatility will give Southgate an option in other positions of the pitch too, in case of injuries or if the team is defending a narrow lead.
Barring Harry Maguire and John Stones, it’s hard to make an argument for any centre-back having a better season than Godfrey.
If it were on us, he would certainly be on the plane for the Euros this summer.
