View: Ancelotti faces major rebuild after Everton suffer huge loss v Man City

Manchester City had a point to prove after losing to Brighton earlier this week, but Everton could have at least given the Premier League champions a game.

The Toffees fell to a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side on the final day of the season, knocking Everton down below Leeds United and Arsenal into tenth place.

The Blues have turned in a number of disappointing performances over the past few weeks but their display against City showed a complete lack of desire, heart and effort.

Having started with Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden all on the field, City’s possessed an abundance of talent that Everton simply couldn’t match.

However they let the Cityzens into the game by making mistakes, failing to close down De Bruyne for his opener and handing over possession poorly for the second just minutes later from Jesus.

Michael Keane’s sloppy play to hand City their second, and the many defensive mistakes that Everton concede a further three goals served to indicate just how much work Carlo Ancelotti has to do this summer.

Everton

Everton had been competing for the European spots as recently as a few months back but they finished tenth in the table, despite the struggles of many of the clubs above them throughout the campaign.

Everton have had their fare share of injury issues this season however Ancelotti will look at the players at his disposal and determine that he doesn’t have the requisite quality to breach the top six.

Farhad Moshiri has plenty of ambition to one day bring silverware to Merseyside, and Everton simply don’t have enough ability within their ranks to deliver upon those ambitions.

Ancelotti will be tasked with wielding the axe this summer and he must be efficient with it. The Blues cannot afford to carry any more passengers, and with so many players allowing games to pass them by this season they need radical change.

Ultimately it depends on how much money Moshiri provides Ancelotti with, and whether Everton can shift their deadwood, but there is plenty of work to be done this summer and after that result that couldn’t have been made more clear.
