Kevin Campbell supports Everton interest in Southampton forward Ings
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes that Danny Ings would be good business for Everton, though they might need to adapt their formation to accommodate him.
The Sunday Mirror (via PressReader) reported earlier this month that the Toffees are one of several Premier League clubs keeping an eye on Ings’ contract situation with Southampton.
The 28-year old has just one year remaining on his contract at St Mary’s, and if Southampton cannot agree a new deal with him they will be forced to sell in order to recoup some of the fee they paid Liverpool for his services in 2019.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell was in support of an Everton move for the former Reds striker, though he acknowledged the squad would need to change for him.
“I think he can [play with Dominic Calvert-Lewin], I definitely think so. I think there could be a little change of formation, like a 4-4-2 or probably a 3-5-2, because you’ve got to get the best out of the front boys.
“To get the best out of the front boys, and Danny Ings especially, you’ve got to be able to give them decent passes and you don’t really get that unless you’ve got someone really dedicated to that, like James Rodriguez, who would be closer to them where he could slip balls in.
“You’d also need two full-backs who can deliver good crosses but you need athleticism at the back, and they could get that if they could get another centre-half. Holgate is athletic but I don’t think he’s good enough on the ball.”
Ings would bring additional firepower to Ancelotti’s offensive options while he would also ease some of the goalscoring burden often placed on Calvert-Lewin’s shoulders.
Ings would require Everton to shell out a significant transfer fee if they wished to land him though, and it remains to be seen how much Ancelotti prioritises forward reinforcements this summer.
