Kevin Campbell believes Calvert-Lewin can play key role for England
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes that Dominic Calvert-Lewin will play a vital role for England at the Euro 2020 tournament this summer.
The 24-year old forward was named in Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional Three Lions squad last week, alongside Everton teammates Jordan Pickford and Ben Godfrey.
All three Toffees stars will hope to make the final cut with the tournament fast approaching, with Calvert-Lewin and Pickford almost certain to be included.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell affirmed the importance of Calvert-Lewin’s inclusion in England’s squad this summer, explaining that his unique attributes make him a key player for the Three Lions.
Campbell said: “I think it depends on who they play, because they have a good range of strikers. There’s going to be a need for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in certain games because aerially he’s probably one of the most dominant players in that squad.
“At the top end of the pitch, if you can expose people from crosses then Calvert-Lewin, he’s your man. There might even be times where you partner him and Kane up there with 20 minutes to go if you’re chasing a game or wanting a win.
“I think he’s going to be a key member of that squad because he brings something that the others don’t.”
Calvert-Lewin’s domestic form over the past 12 months has established him as the go-to back-up striker for England, and hopefully we’ll see him receive game time at Euro 2020.
Possessing pace, power and aerial threat, Calvert-Lewin has the potential to make an impact for England should he be called upon Southgate’s side seek victory on the continental stage.
While we don’t necessarily believe that Calvert-Lewin can compete for a starting berth, we know he’ll work to make an impact whenever he is called upon from the bench.
In other Everton news, this left-footed Toffees ace is on the verge of a major decision as clubs line up to sign him.
