Rafa Benitez, Paulo Fonseca, Erik ten Hag and Roberto Martinez in shortlist of possible candidates for the Everton job

Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti has left Everton after just 17 months in charge of the Toffees, returning to Real Madrid to succeed Zinedine Zidane.

While the news has come as a surprise, the Goodison Park outfit have started the search for a replacement.

Rangers’ Steven Gerrard, West Ham United’s David Moyes and ex-Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo have all been linked with the job, but there are other candidates being eyed as well.

According to The Athletic, Rafa Benitez, Paulo Fonseca, Erik ten Hag and Roberto Martinez are also on a shortlist of possible replacements for Ancelotti at Everton.

The aforementioned quartet have also been linked with the vacant Spurs job, and it will be interesting to see who becomes appointed in the end.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Benitez, Martinez and ten Hag are all on the radar of the North London giants, while Sportitalia TV’s Gianluigi Longari reported that Fonseca coach was proposed to them by his representatives last week, with the club now considering him as a potential candidate for the role.

These four managers have proven themselves in the game, and they would fancy their chances of taking Everton to the next level if appointed.

Benitez’s affiliation with Liverpool could put some Toffees faithful off, though, but the Champions League-winning boss has the needed experience to turn the current crop of Everton players into consistent performers.

Martinez has been in charge of Belgium since leaving Goodison Park in 2016, taking them to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

He would be keen to win the European Championships with them this summer, and having such an achievement on his curriculum vitae will make him more desirable.

Ten Hag and Fonseca have won league titles with Ajax and Shakhtar Donetsk respectively, and those experiences could come in handy at Goodison Park if either of them is appointed.
