Sam Allardyce rules out Everton return and digs at his Blues detractors

Sam Allardyce looks to have ruled out a shock return as Everton manager after Carlo Ancelotti left the club earlier this week.

Ancelotti made his own managerial return as he made the move back to Real Madrid on Tuesday, exiting Goodison Park after just 18 months on Merseyside.

A host of current and former Premier League managers are reported to be under consideration by the Blues board, including ex-Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, but speaking on talkSPORT [03/06/21], Alan Brazil mooted a different name – Allardyce.

Brazil asked Allardyce, who recently left relegated West Brom, “Would you go back, Sam?”

“No, I cannot see the phone call from Farhad,” Allardyce replied.

“Unfortunately, there was a certain element in Everton that started to complain about my style as always because it lives with me, it’s like that big tent and weight on top of my head.

“They gave me a ring because they were desperate last time, as a man that’s capable of getting them out of difficult situations.

“I can’t see that happening.”

Right answer

There have been a bunch of ex-Blues managers linked with a return, including David Moyes, Marco Silva and Roberto Martinez, but this would be the most unpopular of all.

Big Sam failed to endear himself to supporters with a boring, bland style of football that had us checking our watches every couple of minutes, hoping the referee would blow his whistle to dull the pain of having to spectate another defensive ‘masterclass’.

Sure, Big Sam got some results and got us out of the troubled position we were in when he assumed control in November 2017, but he was a short-term solution for a short-term problem, nothing more.

He would have been handsomely recompensed for his work with the Blues so there should never have been any hard feelings from him.

At least he is well aware of his relationship with supporters and knows there is no chance of a return to the club.

It really would have been the final straw of a tumultuous first half of the year if he came back as manager.
