Adam Jones wants Marcel Brands to have more power at Everton
Liverpool Echo’s Everton correspondent Adam Jones says Marcel Brands must be given more power in the future if the Blues are to be a success.
In the Royal Blue podcast, Jones explained the importance of getting Carlo Ancelotti’s successor right and the role the director of football must play in that.
The past few managerial appointments have been bizarre ones without any proper thinking behind them, and Everton mustn’t go down that route again.
Jones said, “I think the time has come he does just need to get somebody who’s going to work in that sort of style.
“Maybe he’ll go back to the previous transfer strategy he had. Maybe he’ll go back to a different strategy he wants to have with a newer manager. Somebody working in tandem with Marcel Brands is always going to be the better option.
“Over the last few years we’ve directors of football not choosing the managers and that’s not worked out too well. It’s led to a few disasters like Carlo Ancelotti walking out on us.
“It’s getting ridiculous the number of managers that Everton are going through and the lack of stability we’ve had. Brands has got to be at the forefront of this next decision.”
Spot on
Just when it looked like things were going as per plan, Ancelotti decided to walk out, and it’s hard to blame him for that, given the lure of the Real Madrid job.
However, it’s crucial that the next manager is a Brands appointee and not one cherry-picked by Bill Kenwright or Farhad Moshiri.
Brands is a football man, has achieved success at his previous jobs, and is why he is on the club’s payroll. Getting managerial appointments right is arguably the most important decision directors of football have to make at clubs.
We shouldn’t go for someone that’s not previously worked with a director as they feel it will undermine their authority.
The modern game is moving in that hierarchical direction where managers do not have that much of a say as they did in the past, and Brands needs to get that kind of character at Goodison Park.
The lack of communication with Ancelotti was glaring, and embarrassing to say the least.
