Kevin Campbell shares verdict as Robin Olsen prepares to leave Everton
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell has admitted that he was never comfortable when Everton started Robin Olsen in the Premier League.
Alan Myers of Sky Sports has shared that the Swede will leave Goodison Park once his loan contract expires, and return to Jose Mourinho at Roma.
Campbell insisted that a new manager may have got rid of him anyway, with Jordan Pickford the clear number one at Goodison Park.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “I’ll be honest, I was never too sure with him.
“The new manager would have come in and assessed the squad because new managers might have their own mindset of what they want to do.
“He might and might want to change everything, we’ve seen it happen before. Look at when Pep went to Manchester City, he got rid of Joe Hart.”
It was previously reported that Carlo Ancelotti was a big fan of Olsen, and even had a meeting with Marcel Brands to share his desire to sign him again next season.
Those hopes appeared to disappear as soon as the Italian left for Real Madrid in the past week, with the new manager not yet revealed.
Pickford is likely to remain the number one no matter which keeper was sitting as the second choice, so it may be smarter to hand that shirt to Joao Virginia.
The Portuguese youngster won’t be expecting much action, and that could benefit the new gaffer, who can comfortably select Pickford with no expectations from elsewhere.
