Athletic journalist claims Wolves must sell this summer amid Pedro Neto-Everton links

Wolves may have to make a major sale this summer according to The Athletic, amid reports linking winger Pedro Neto with a move to Premier League rivals Everton.

According to The Times journalist Duncan Castles, in conversation on The Transfer Window Podcast, the Blues have a long-standing interest in the 21-year-old who scored six goals and registered five assists in 31 Premier League appearances for the West Midlands side last season.

Castles claimed Wolves have put a number of players on the market in an “attempt to raise cash in order to rebuild the team”.

This has been reiterated in some part by The Athletic’s Wolves reporter Tim Spiers who claims they will have to “sell big if they want to buy big”.

However, Spiers says Adama Traore or Ruben Neves are more plausible departures from the club, with Neto and Raul Jimenez less likely to leave due to their current injuries.

Steer clear for a year

Neto is undoubtedly a great player but he suffered a serious injury in April which means he will be out of action for a substantial number of months.

The Wolves club website called it a “significant injury to his knee cap” and that meant he was ruled out of their remaining fixtures of the 2020/21 campaign, while former club physio Paul Darby, who served as a physio at Molineux between 1986 and 1995, predicted him to be out for between six to nine months. We need players to come in and hit the mark immediately next season, and Neto’s injury means that is likely to be an impossible mission for the Portugal international who scored on his international debut last year.

A winger is top of our priorities but director of football Marcel Brands should look elsewhere given Neto’s current predicament, regardless of whether his former boss Nuno Espirito Santo takes the Everton reigns and puts him top of his wishlist.
