Jordan Henderson takes penalty from Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin for England

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson suffered an embarrassing moment on Sunday after an incident involving Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The duo, who are usually Merseyside enemies, were teammates at the Riverside Stadium on Sunday evening during England’s final friendly fixture before the upcoming European Championships.

But there was a difference of opinion during the second half as Calvert-Lewin picked up the ball to take a penalty after he was fouled in the penalty area.

The Blues striker was taken off duties by Henderson, who took the ball out of his hands to take it himself, as ITV commentator Sam Matterface noticed during live coverage of the game.

He said: “This is interesting because Dominic Calvert-Lewin picked the ball up but Jordan Henderson went over to grab it.”

Henderson duly had his penalty saved, and Matterface added: “He wanted the moment but couldn’t convert from 12 yards.”

Always want the glory

Henderson was chasing his first England goal, but surely he should have left it to Calvert-Lewin?

If the duo are both on the pitch during a game at EURO 2020, who is more likely to take one? The striker who scored 16 Premier League goals last season, or the goal-shy midfielder who missed a penalty in a major international tournament for England?

Furthermore, it was only 1-0 and, while only a friendly, surely you try to secure the win before you start experimenting?

It’s just classic Liverpool, even out of Premier League hours, they still want the glory.

Getting another goal going into a major tournament would have given Calvert-Lewin a big boost, yet he finished empty-handed because of Henderson.
