John Barnes suggests Phillipe Coutinho would be big Everton upgrade on James Rodriguez

John Barnes has advised Everton to make a mouthwatering move for ex-Liverpool star Phillipe Coutinho to replace James Rodriguez.

Coutinho, 28, is currently at La Liga giants Barcelona, who he joined from the Reds in 2018.

However, the Brazilian star has struggled for consistency since he made the move from Merseyside, and he was even shipped out on loan to Bayern Munich for the 2019/20 season.

Despite his indifferent form former Liverpool hero Barnes believes the Blues should shell out on Coutinho to replace Colombian playmaker Rodriguez.

“Would a move to Everton be good for him? Only time will tell as he needs to choose a club that suits the way he plays,” he told BettingOdds.

“He would do a better job than James Rodriguez. For Everton, I believe it would be a fantastic move if they can get him, but do they have the money for him and the finances to offer him the wages he wants? Who knows?

“I think it would be a great move for Everton.”

It’s 2021, John

Let’s just move past the obvious issues with Coutinho being an ex-Red – people will have their different views on that and whether it is right or wrong. It’s hard to be objective there.

But one thing that is obvious is that the 2021 version of Coutinho is not the one who left Liverpool for a staggering sum in 2018.

He has suffered an enormous dip in form and confidence, failing to make himself a first-team fixture at the Camp Nou.

But not only are there major question marks surrounding his abilities, which look to be fading fast, but he has not made an appearance for Barcelona in 2021 due to injury.

Considering his wage demands, which are likely to be extortionate, how could we ever justify his transfer? It seems a crazy idea to suggest, but maybe we shouldn’t be surprised given it has come from the mouth of an ex-Red.

If he’s so good still, why don’t they have him?

There are issues surrounding Rodriguez at Goodison Park, but Coutinho is certainly not the answer to those problems.
