Kevin Campbell: Southgate likely held talks with Everton star Calvert-Lewin this week

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has insisted that Gareth Southgate was likely to have held talks with Dominic Calvert-Lewin after England’s 1-0 win v Romania.

The Everton star looked set to take a penalty, but the ball was taken from him by Jordan Henderson who eventually ended up missing.

Calvert-Lewin has since been accused of sulking, something that Campbell believes Southgate will have been quick to put to an end.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “I just think Henderson, the experience allowed him to get it off Calvert-Lewin.

“Obviously, he probably wanted a boost after just getting to this point, he took the penalty, but he’s not match-fit, nowhere near.

“It’s a difficult one. Calvert-Lewin, let the striker have it. The thing is at international level, there’s no room for sulking, and if he was, the manager would have had a word with him.”

Shocker.

Calvert-Lewin not following up on the penalty wasn’t him sulking, it was all from an embarrassing radio stint from Danny Murphy yet again.

Adrian Durham hit back at those claims and even insisted that Henderson’s actions could have led to the strikers’ confidence being destroyed.

One week away from the EUROs, the spot-kick should have been given to the striker to give him that goalscoring feeling once again and boost his confidence.

Campbell is right to suggest behind-the-scenes talks, with Southgate wanting every single one of his players to be firing on all cylinders going into that clash against Croatia on Sunday.
