Oliver Kay: Everton would not have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo if there was compensation

Everton would not have hired Nuno Espirito Santo if he was still at Wolves, according to The Athletic journalist Oliver Kay.

The Blues appear to have finally landed Carlo Ancelotti’s successor after nearly two weeks searching for a new manager, with the Telegraph’s John Percy claiming on Twitter that Nuno to Everton is “almost a done deal”.

Despite the search appearing to have reached a successful conclusion, Kay has made a concerning claim about the board on his personal Twitter profile.

He wrote: “Clubs should always have a clear view of what kind of manager they want next. The vision might evolve over time and so will the names, but it should never just be a case of ‘Who’s available?’

“Nuno’s fine, but there’s no way Everton would have paid to get him out of Wolves.”

Wallet well and truly in the pocket?

It’s been less than two weeks since Ancelotti walked out on us to rejoin Real Madrid, but we’ve already witnessed a farcical manager pursuit of epic proportions.

The board seem to have chopped and changed between their ideal person, with numerous voices causing confusion among the Blues hierarchy.

But it looks like Nuno emerged as the prime candidate, at least of those that were available, following his exit from Premier League rivals Wolves in May.

However, we’re a bit concerned to hear that the club wouldn’t have shelled out on him if he was still contracted to Wolves.

Surely we should be looking to hire the right manager, regardless of compensation fees?

We’re not suggesting the board should spend multi-millions on it, but surely getting the right manager is equally, if not more, important than signing players? Did we only appoint Nuno because he was a free agent?

Farhad Moshiri will never admit that, but it’s worrying to hear suggestions that it could be a reason.

In other Everton news, this is when the Blues could announce Nuno Espirito Santo, according to Fabrizio Romano.
