Andy Gray implores Moshiri not to hire Rafa Benitez

Former Everton striker Andy Gray has begged owner Farhad Moshiri not to hire former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez for his ‘condescending’ comments about the club in the past.

In late hours of Wednesday evening, news broke that Benitez was now in pole position to take over the reins at Goodison Park. Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie even reported he could be appointed by the end of Thursday (today).

He is believed to have had a positive meeting with the club, and they have reportedly decided that he is the right man for the job.

Given the fact that Benitez once managed Everton’s rivals Liverpool and won them the Champions League meant that a fraction of the Toffees fanbase would not be too impressed by that move.

TV Pundit and former Everton player Andy Gray also shared the opinion of those fans.

The Liverpool Echo quoted him as saying, “I think if Farhad Moshiri goes ahead with that, even if he didn’t know what Evertonians feel or think, he will find a huge amount – I would guess the majority – will not be so happy either.

“Should he be managing Everton in my opinion? No. Should he be anywhere near the job? No.

“Let’s not forget when he was Liverpool manager he was extremely condescending about our club, my club, and that ‘small club’ he talked about.”

Who else then, Andy?

Of all the names we’ve been linked to, Benitez comes with the experience of winning big trophies and dealing with huge egos inside dressing rooms.

If we are to be the big club we aspire to be, then we will need someone with the know-how of how to handle these kinds of situations.

Benitez may have said things about Everton in the past, but if he is given the job, the least we can do as fans, is back him and give him time to prove himself.

He’s done a relatively impressive job wherever he’s gone, has experience of winning a Champions League, a domestic league and also has amassed years of Premier League experience under his belt.

The style of football will also not be a concern as it probably would have been under Nuno, so we’re hoping that Benitez gets the job and does well at Goodison Park.
