Everton fans hang abusive banners aimed at Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park

Everton fans have hung abusive banners aimed at Rafa Benitez ahead of his reported arrival at Goodison Park.

Benitez, 61, is set to become the next Blues manager with The Times reporting that the Spaniard is expecting an offer from the Merseyside club.

Times journalist Paul Joyce described the former Liverpool manager’s imminent appointment at Goodison “the most contentious in Everton’s history” while he also pointed out how strongly some Evertonians have reacted to the news.

While we respect everyone has an opinion about Benitez and if you don’t want him to be Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Goodison because of his legendary status at Liverpool, that’s fair enough.

But some fans have taken it too far by hanging disgusting and abusive banners aimed at the 61-year-old outside Goodison.

The Twitter account ‘Everton aren’t we‘ shared four images of banners that were hung at Goodison in light of the news Benitez is set to become manager.

While one simply says “Benitez not welcome”, another banner is far more abusive and cannot be shared on our website.

There’s simply no need for the abusive banner.

We don’t really have an issue with the one that we have shared on this site because at the end of the day, that’s one fan’s banner speaking out for a lot of supporters.

While we wouldn’t mind seeing Benitez in charge of Goodison Park because we feel it’s been so long since he managed at Liverpool it’s insignificant, there’s a way to go about showing your disdain towards a decision and this isn’t it.

Who should your anger really be directed at?

Benitez lives on Merseyside and is out of work. You cannot blame him for wanting the job.

However, you can blame the board for trying to hire him if you don’t want the Spaniard at Goodison Park that badly.

And you don’t resort to abuse. These a human beings at the end of the day and you don’t have the right to hang up such disgusting banners about them.
