TalkSPORT pundit admits Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has changed his perceptions

Guardian journalist Barry Glendenning has admitted he got it wrong over his opinion on Everton and England star Jordan Pickford.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper is currently on international duty with The Three Lions, and he has starred in their first two group games of the European Championships, keeping two clean sheets.

He was particularly impressive in Friday’s fierce clash against Scotland, where he was required to make some important saves as his side toiled to a 0-0 draw at Wembley.

Speaking on talkSPORT [20/06/21] a couple of days after Pickford’s impressive display, Glendenning held his hands up after admitting he had doubts over the shot-stopper heading into Euro 2020.

“I wouldn’t have had him near the team before the tournament started but he’s been brilliant the first two games,” he said.

“So yes, I have to concede I was wrong on that one.”

Back in form

Pickford was back to near his imperious best for England on Friday, with one particularly stunning save to prevent a shock Scotland victory.

He’s had an up and down time of it with the Blues since he signed from Sunderland in 2017, and he has had to contend with his fair share of doubters.

But performances like Friday show just why we shelled out such a big fee for his services, and why the England national team continue to place so much faith in him.

He’s now getting to an age where he should be starting to enter his prime years as a footballer.

It often comes later for goalkeepers, such is the responsibility faced by them, and thus maturity is key to thrive in a pressured environment.

Pickford has been guilty of over-exuberance at times for the Blues, and it has cost us crucial points over recent years.

But there’s still a very talented goalkeeper there, and we need him to be on top form next season and lessen our need to recruit in that area.

That would save us a massive financial headache, as there are numerous other areas we need to address.
