Alan Myers: No Everton appointment expected this weekend

Alan Myers has insisted that Everton aren’t expected to make a manager appointment this weekend at Goodison Park.

Rafa Benitez is still in the driving seat for the vacancy in Merseyside, but the Spaniard is not yet announced.

Despite the strong links, Farhad Moshiri and the board appear to be waiting before biting the bullet and confirming the news.

Toffees fans wishing it would happen sooner rather than later look set to be disappointed over the weekend.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on Friday afternoon, Myers shared the major update to his followers.

“I don’t expect any news today, or probably not over the weekend either,” he wrote.

Probably not.

So, it may not be as close as everyone is suggesting.

Benitez has been linked for more than a week now, but the Spaniard may not be as close to the job as we all think.

Roberto Martinez has also been linked with the vacant job, and this throws up the question; is the EUROs slowing things down?

The Belgian manager is currently in the round-of-16, but with games against Portugal and then potentially Italy and France coming up, he may be home sooner rather than later.

Should Martinez come home soon, he may jump ahead of Benitez in the race, but time will definitely tell.

The former Liverpool man looks more likely though, and even if it doesn’t happen this weekend, it surely will next week with pre-season set to start.
