Everton could still appoint Galtier despite Benitez links – report

Everton could still convince Christophe Galtier to move to Goodison Park instead of joining Nice this summer.

According to a report in L’Equipe (Jun 25, Pg. 30), Galtier’s proposed move to Nice has hit a roadblock, which leaves Everton with a slim chance of tempting the Frenchman to join.

Initially, Galtier gave Nice his word that he’ll join them at the end of the season and they would have to pay Lille a compensation fee for his services.

However, Lille’s president Olivier Letang has now decided to intervene and is demanding a compensation of £8.6 million for the manager – nearly twice as much as what was previously agreed with Nice.

Should Everton want to make a u-turn and not go ahead with Benitez’s signing, they will have to meet Lille’s demands for the manager.

Small window of opportunity

The L’Equipe report says that Nice are mulling over the compensation fee, and that’s complicated things to an extent. However, they’re still confident that Galtier will be the Nice manager for next season.

That being said, they’ve mentioned our interest in him, and despite closing in on appointing Rafa Benitez, we still could tempt Galtier to join this summer.

He did the unthinkable this past season and put an end to PSG’s domestic league-winning run by claiming the Ligue 1 title with Lille.

That put him on our radar, and it’s fair to say that our fanbase would take him over Benitez in a heartbeat.

If we are to do something, the best time to do it will be now as Nice want him just as badly as our fans do, but our protests seem to be falling on deaf ears as the board is likely to appoint the former Liverpool boss this summer.
