Boyhood Blues fan Jonathan Walters hails Everton board ahead of Rafa Benitez announcement

Jonathan Walters has hailed the Everton board after reports that Rafa Benitez is set to be appointed as manager next week.

Sky Sports relayed the news on Saturday afternoon, with the Spaniard expected to sign a deal “in the next few days”.

Reacting to news on his personal Twitter profile, former Premier League striker Walters, a boyhood Blues fan, blended his voice of support for the decision with owner Farhad Moshiri seemingly ignoring a large section of supporters who are opposed to Benitez’s arrival.

Walters wrote: “Appointing Rafa Benitez is a masterstroke at a time when a building project at Everton is much needed.

“His obsession and knowledge of football is unparalleled. He’s managed all over the world since Liverpool but his family haven’t moved.

“Right person. Right club. Right time.”

Deluded

People can defend the appointment of Benitez by pointing to his track record, that’s their prerogative.

Others will have differing views, and refer back to his previous remarks against the Blues, as well as his obvious Liverpool connection.

But to suggest he’s the perfect manager for the job beggars belief.

This is someone who has spent the last two years struggling in China. Before that, he was uninspiring at Newcastle United, and has a relegation on his CV with him, regardless of how late his arrival was there.

He’s fallen out with senior club figures at pretty much everywhere he has gone, and charisma and media personality are not his strong points.

Benitez has his obvious strengths, in that he is a wonderful tactician who is a superb organiser.

We’ll get behind him, but to say he’s the right person, at the right time, at the right club…it’s embarrassing.
