Everton board had doubts over Christophe Galtier’s suitability for English football

Everton have appointed Rafa Benitez as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor against the wishes of the majority of their fans, snubbing the likes of Christophe Galtier.

The Frenchman is currently the manager of OGC Nice, but was considered by the Toffees after leading Lille to the Ligue 1 title last term.

According to The Athletic, Galtier had admirers at the Merseyside club, but could not command much support on the Everton board.

There were doubts over his suitability for English football given his lack of English, and the fact that a verbal agreement with Nice was already in place also made a deal with the Toffees unlikely [The Athletic].

Missed chance?

While Benitez has an impressive curriculum vitae, he last won a major top-flight trophy in 2014.

We want a manager capable of guiding us into the top-six and helping us land our first piece of silverware since 1995.

The Spaniard has the potential to deliver both, but Galtier would have been the best man for such a job.

He pipped the almighty Paris Saint-Germain to the title last season on a decent budget, and we can only dream of what he would be capable of with the backing of a Farhad Moshiri.

The Everton owner wanted a Hollywood appointment again despite Ancelotti’s disappointing reign, and he got one in the 61-year-old.

We are hoping that decision turns out good, but there are plenty of Evertonians waiting to tell Moshiri “we told you so”.

We missed out on an opportunity to land one of the best managers in the game right now, and our loss could turn out to be Nice’s gain.
