Fabrizio Romano: Everton have gone quiet in Denzel Dumfries chase

Everton have “gone quiet” in the race to sign PSV right-back Denzel Dumfries, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The world-renowned Italian journalist was speaking via his Twitch channel [04/07/21], where he delivered updates and developments on transfers this summer, as well as responding to questions by fans.

Regarding Dumfries, Romano said: “It’s gone quiet at the moment on Everton talks. Inter [Milan] are going for something different due to the high fee and their financial situation.”

Go all out

If his performances at Euro 2020 were anything to go by, Dumfries could take the Premier League by storm.

Operating as a right wing-back for the Netherlands, the 25-year-old was a constant menace to opposing defences as he bombed down the wing at a rate of knots.

Despite his deep starting position, Dumfries was continually found in the opposition’s penalty area looking to wreak havoc.

In just four games he scored twice, including a winner in their opener against Ukraine.

He was unfortunate to be in the Netherlands side which was knocked out by the Czech Republic in the round of 16, after Matthijs de Ligt’s red card put them on the back foot.

With Seamus Coleman well into his thirties, and no obvious deputy behind him, signing a right-back has to be a priority for director of football Marcel Brands this summer.

As a powerful, energetic full-back, Dumfries ticks a lot of boxes.

However, if Inter do step up their interest Brands may find it difficult to entice him to Goodison Park.

The Serie A champions can offer Champions League football next season, while we didn’t even qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Our only hope would be if Dumfries really wants to test himself in the Premier League, a competition that looks tailor-made for a player of his qualities.

Until the point he signals he wants to sign for Inter, we should be doing everything to convince him to move to Merseyside.
