Kevin Campbell urges Everton to reinforce central defence

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has urged Everton to strengthen their defensive options this summer in the transfer window.

Rafa Benitez will be evaluating his squad at Finch Farm at this very moment, and central defenders continue to be linked.

Campbell believes an extra “quality” option in that area will take the Toffees to the next level in the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “I just think that Everton had issues when Holgate played and didn’t play well.

“Mina has been injured, they need to be solid at the back. Godfrey has been a fantastic addition, but I think they need more quality back there.

“If you get more quality, you’re beefing that squad up. That is the key because you are going to get injuries.”

Who could it be?

The one name that keeps popping up this month is Merih Demiral from Juventus.

After struggling at EURO 2020 with Turkey, it appears as though the Serie A giants are happy to cut ties with the young defender.

Calciomercato recently reported that the Toffees are the frontrunners to sign the defender, but would need to spend more than £30million to do just that.

It is highly unlikely the club would pay that for Demiral, but if Benitez deems it a key area he needs to strengthen, it could happen.

Right-back and a couple of options in the final third seem more necessary from the outside in, but time will tell which route we take in this window.
