Alex Iwobi could be deployed as No 10 next season under Rafa Benitez
Everton attacker Alex Iwobi could be played in the number 10 role under Rafa Benitez for the upcoming season.
The Nigerian has made a name for himself as a wide attacker before he moved to Goodison Park, and even after joining he’s predominantly played on the flanks.
However, in Everton’s 3-0 victory against Accrington Stanley, he was seen occupying more central positions and even provided an assist from the ‘hole’ for Tom Cannon’s goal.

In his post-match piece, Liverpool Echo’s Adam Jones wrote, “It’s not clear whether the Nigeria international was playing in that ‘No.10’ role throughout his time on the pitch, although it does seem from the clip that James Rodriguez was playing on the right-hand side.
“Playing centrally is something the 25-year-old seems to enjoy more than lining up on the flank, and it would certainly be intriguing if that’s the position Benitez can see him playing in the future.”
Would be interesting
Iwobi has often seemed isolated on the right flank and his career appears to be stagnating as he’s unable to offer the X factor whenever he’s given the opportunity to play.
However, a change of role could see him impact the game regularly and would see him get involved more often than he did playing on the flanks.

We’re aware that he’s got exemplary movement and an eye for a killer pass – two skills that would hold him in good stead playing as an attacking midfielder.
Benitez could move to a 4-2-3-1 which could see Iwobi start in the number 10 position and drift out wide if the game demands it. Having him in our team will make us a more fluid side going forward and in a different role, he could have the impact of a new signing.
It would be great if James Rodriguez stays put for another year as he’s the kind of player who could help Iwobi take his game to the next level.
