Everton should pull out all the stops to sign Clement Lenglet
Everton have recently been linked with a move for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet ahead of the 2021/22 season by Fichajes.
They claim that Rafael Benitez believes he can “recover the best version” of the Frenchman as he doesn’t “trust” Yerry Mina.
The report states that Lenglet would be available for €20million [£17million] because of Barcelona’s financial situation, and we believe he could be the ideal partner for Michael Keane.
It has to be said that the 26-year-old didn’t have his best season during the 2020/21 campaign.
However, he has proved in the past that he is an excellent defender and could be a significant upgrade on what the Toffees already have if Benitez can get him back to where he was.
For example, during the 2019/20 campaign in the league, the Frenchman averaged 76.4 passes per game and had a pass success rate of 92.3% [WhoScored].
This suggests that Lenglet is calm on the ball, much more relaxed than Mina or Mason Holgate, who in the last season averaged fewer passes and also had a worse passing accuracy [WhoScored].
If you also take Lenglet’s tackling statistics from the 2018/19 season, you can see that he averaged 2.3 per match, which is better than Holgate and Mina again.
So there are some obvious reasons why the Toffees should be trying to sign Lenglet based on his past seasons.
The key would be about Benitez getting the best from him, but the Spaniard has a reputation for improving players, so if there was any manager who could get the best out of the 26-year-old, it could be Benitez [Liverpool Echo].
Everton should also be in a favourable position to sign him because Barca have to trim their wage bill before they are allowed to register any new players, which means that Lenglet could be sacrificed to make way for some new blood [The Athletic].
If the Toffees can do a deal for Lenglet at around £17m, we see no reason why they shouldn’t be bringing him in and making him a key part of their defence.
