Former Everton defender Michael Ball claims Jonjoe Kenny deserves a chance in Rafa Benitez’s first team.

First-choice right-back Seamus Coleman is 32 and the club are understood to be in the hunt for a replacement this summer.

Denzel Dumfries has been the name that’s popped up, but Ball believes that Kenny can do a good enough job.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Ball said, “He’s [Kenny] going to have a good opportunity now.

“Maybe he comes back to pre-season fully fit and ready to go and Rafa might give him that confidence. ‘Yeah, you could be our next number two. You’ll take over from Seamus Coleman or be a great back-up for Seamus.’ ”

Agreed

We don’t mind Kenny staying or leaving, but to suggest that he’s good enough to take over from Coleman is far-fetched, to say the least.

Kenny is a good utility player who can play in a number of positions but that’s about it. We need a specialist who can run up and down the right flank and offer some sort of a threat going forward which the Englishman clearly can’t.

Even if the club decide that it’s the right time to cash in on him, then so be it. But he hasn’t convinced us in his two seasons out on loan that he’s good enough to be our number one right-back in the coming years.

He may be a homegrown player who’s appreciated by the Goodison Park faithful so we can understand to keep him on as a squad player.

However, whether or not he’s fine with that sort of role remains to be seen.
