Kevin Campbell: Mason Holgate lacks quality, Everton set for transfer tussle

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has insisted that it would be “smart” if Everton brought in Ben White to replace Mason Holgate.

The Toffees have been linked with a move for the Brighton defender, but the Express has reported that Arsenal are close to sealing the deal.

Campbell believes it would be a smart move for the former Leeds loanee, but it doesn’t look likely to happen.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “Smart.

“The better players, you want them. Especially if you’re going to play that passing game, you need those players in there.

“At times, Holgate is decent, but when it comes to the crunch, I don’t think he has that quality on the ball, and White definitely has it.

“It’s going to be a tussle.”

Everton

Harsh.

Holgate has rarely put a foot wrong for the Toffees and has captained us at times despite his young age.

To dismiss him this early into the reign of Rafa Benitez, who will be analysing his squad deeply before the start of the Premier League.

Even if the move for White is unlikely, a deal for a central defender looks high on the list, with Kalidou Koulibaly and Kurt Zouma also linked.

There are plenty of moves to be made over the next month, and that will lead to numerous tussles, just as Campbell predicted.
