Jordan Pickford breaks silence after Euro 2020 final defeat

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has finally taken to Instagram to share his thoughts on England’s Euro 2020 final defeat on Sunday.

The Three Lions came within touching distance of sealing their first major piece of silverware after 55 years, only to be denied on penalties against Italy.

Pickford was one of the few impressive performers for England, making two key penalty saves on the night.

On his personal Instagram account, the Everton goalkeeper expressed his disappointment at the defeat, and sent a message to the England faithful.

He wrote, “I’m absolutely gutted that we couldn’t get over the line on Sunday night.

“We as a team did everything we could to bring it home but unfortunately that’s football.

“We will come back and do everything we can to make you all proud once again.”

Silenced his critics

Even though Pickford did not win the EUROs, he did enough to silence his critics by winning the Golden Gloves award. Having kept five clean sheets in the tournament – he ended it being the only keeper not to concede a goal from open play.

Denmark’s goal was scored by Mikkel Damsgaard from a direct free-kick while Italy equalised on Sunday from a corner when Leonardo Bonucci slotted the ball into the back of the net.

There were a number of people on his back and he did enough to silence his critics – strengthening his credentials for being England’s number one keeper at the World Cup in 18 months.

Not only was he a good shot stopper, he also was exceptional with the ball at his feet and helped kick start several attacks for England.

He may have had a few shaky moments but he’s only human and we couldn’t be prouder of his achievements for the national team.

Pickford has earned himself a much-deserved break and we’re eagerly anticipating the kind of reception he receives next season at Goodison Park.
